A few recommended vegan resources
Obviously, if you are reading this post (another in the Becoming Vegan series), you have at least one vegan recipe website that you can refer to – Novel Eats. That’s fantastic, and I’m glad to have you here. That said, if you are a new vegan or thinking about becoming one, I think that it’s important that you find several go-to vegan blogs and websites with a variety of recipes. Not all vegans have the same tastes or cooking styles, so if you rely on only one website, you are going to find recipes that reflect that person’s preferences in food – not necessarily your own.
Here are a few of my go-to vegan websites when I am interested in trying out a new recipe or being inspired by one.
Fatfree Vegan Kitchen – This is the first vegan blog that I found and read, so I have a special place in my vegan heart for it and Susan Voisin (I have referred to her blog so frequently in my home that my husband now knows that when I am talking about “Susan”, I am talking about that Susan). She is also responsible for giving my husband and I the inspiration and base recipe to create many, many vegan cheesecakes. Fatfree Vegan Kitchen offers a plethora of recipes that cover many categories, and are all fat-free or are low in fat. She also helpfully posts nutritional information with her recipes which is good for those who are concerned with calories and other nutritional information.
Vegan Yum Yum – This is one of my favorite vegan blogs. I forget how I came across this blog, but her step by step photography (and sometimes video) is both helpful and beautiful. Many of her recipes have been inspired by non-vegan recipes, so you’ll find a lot of great veganized dishes which proves that with a little basic knowledge about how ingredients work (how they bind, or make things fluffy, etc.), that it’s not that hard to make something just as delicious as the original recipe that calls for non-vegan ingredients.
VegWeb – I have gone to this website for years, and while I have hardly participated on their forum, I have relied heavily on the recipes there. While I’ve tried a few recipes that I’d rather never taste again, I’ve found some definite keepers. What I love most about this website, other than the huge database of recipes, are the recipe ratings and the feedback that people share. When a recipe is highly rated and has a lot of positive comments, it usually (but not always) means that it’s probably a winner.
There are many other great vegan or vegan-friendly resources out there like The Post Punk Kitchen (vegan) or Joy the Baker (has a few vegan recipes).
Action Item
Find a recipe that you think you might like on another vegan website to make this week or this weekend. What you are looking for is not a challenging recipe with hard-to-find ingredients, but a recipe that looks like something you would find enjoyable to eat on a semi-regular or regular basis. If you wind up not liking it, it’s okay. I’ve made things from the websites I referenced above that I didn’t care for, but I’ve also made things that were perfect and have wound up in my recipe binder in my kitchen. If you like it, be sure to bookmark or print out the recipe for future use.
Question
If you are already a vegan, then you know that I have left out some good websites. What are your go-to vegan or vegan-friendly websites when you’re in the mood to cook or bake?
Looking for recommended cookbooks? Here’s one I love called, The Mediterranean Vegan Kitchen.

This is great! I love finding great resources like yours to find new and wonderful sites to explore. Thanks!
Vegan Dad is another favorite. His recipies are quick easy and kid friendly (he has 4 kids to keep happy). Not always fat-free but they are easy to edit so that they have less fat.

I also have a vegan blog. Just became vegan and just started the blog, so it includes my trials and tribulations. On both accounts!
These are all great guys! Keep ‘em coming!
I use VegWeb allllllllllllll the time! In fact, I spent a couple hours collecting recipes last night.
My mom is on Gweneth Paltrow’s e-mail send out and although she isn’t vegan, she is very organic and into sustainable living. She has a lot of delicious vegan recipes (also a lot of non-vegan) plus household tips and things that like.
One of my favorite blogs to read is Happy Vegan Face!!!
She posts the most yummy, fresh, homemade food ever and posts all the recipes to boot! YUM!

Aside from Susan’s, some of my favorite vegan blogs include Bittersweet Blog, Diet Dessert & Dogs (hi Ricki!), Have Cake Will Travel, and Andrea’s Easy Vegan Recipes.
How about Celine’s Have Cake, Will Travel or Happy Herbivore for fat-free, just for a start?
This is such a great series you’re doing, and I’m so honored to be mentioned. Plus, I literally laughed out loud when you said your husband knows who you mean when you mention my name. Too funny!
Thank you so much for including my blog–and for helping people on the path to veganism.
:) Have really enjoyed your blog, so of course it was no problem mentioning you and it here!
